Strong partnerships between education and industry are essential for preparing students for the future workforce, and our recent Mission: Plant Life Support Immersion Day highlighted the power of these collaborations.

Delivered in partnership with the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space and Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, the program provided students from Crusoe College with a unique opportunity to engage directly with emerging industries shaping our future.

Students were immersed in a simulated Mars habitat where they explored the interdisciplinary challenges involved in sustaining human life beyond Earth. Taking on the roles of plant biologists, engineers, psychologists, and food chemists, students participated in a series of hands-on workshops exploring future foods and nutrition for astronauts, robotics for Mars exploration, and designing plants for space habitats.

As an incredible opportunity for the hard-working Crusoe students, the Growing Beyond Earth team at the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria will be sharing their experiment data with NASA plant scientists. This will be used for ongoing research into which plant species may be suitable for growing food in space, a powerful example of how student learning and innovation here in Bendigo can contribute to research with global — and even interplanetary — impact.

Experiences like these demonstrate the value of industry-informed learning in building curiosity, capability, and confidence in the next generation. Thank you to all our partners and collaborators for helping create such a meaningful and inspiring experience for regional students.
